AL-KO Hand Cylinder Mowers – A Friendly Comparison
So, you’re thinking about getting an AL-KO hand cylinder mower? Great choice! AL-KO make three different models in their hand-push cylinder range, and I’ll walk you through what makes each one different so you can decide which is right for you.
Let’s start with the basics. The three models are the 28.1 HM Easy, the 38.1 HM Comfort, and the 38.1 HM Premium. As you might guess from the names, they go from entry-level through to top-of-the-range, with prices to match. The Easy comes in at £65.83, the Comfort at £82.50, and the Premium at £99.17. So there’s about £16-17 between each step up. *(Prices correct at time of writing, subject to change)
The Big Difference: Cutting Width
The first thing to note is that the Easy model has a narrower cutting width of 28cm, while both the Comfort and Premium have a wider 38cm cut. That’s a fairly significant difference – the wider models will get the job done in fewer passes, which matters if you’ve got a decent-sized lawn. But if you’ve got a small garden or lots of tight spaces to navigate around, the narrower Easy might actually suit you better.
Cutting Height
All three mowers can cut down to 14mm, which is pretty short if you like a close-cropped lawn. Where they differ is at the top end. The Easy and Comfort both max out at 35mm, but the Premium goes up to 45mm. That extra 10mm might not sound like much, but it’s handy if you prefer a slightly longer lawn or if the grass has got away from you a bit between cuts.
The way you adjust the height is different too. The Easy and Comfort both have a four-stage adjustment, so you’ve got four preset heights to choose from. The Premium, on the other hand, has infinitely adjustable height settings, meaning you can dial in exactly the height you want rather than being limited to preset positions. If you’re a bit of a perfectionist about your lawn, that’s a nice feature to have.
Handle Design and Comfort
This is where the model names start to make sense. The Easy has a fairly basic handle setup – it does the job, but nothing fancy. Step up to the Comfort and you get ergonomic handles with a rubber grip, which makes pushing more comfortable, especially if you’ve got a larger area to cover. The handles on the Comfort are also foldable, which is brilliant for storage.
The Premium takes it a step further with what AL-KO call “Quick Lock” handles – still ergonomic with rubber grips and foldable, but quicker and easier to fold and unfold. The Premium also adds rubber bumpers, which protect the mower if you accidentally bump into walls, fences, or garden furniture.
Weight
There’s a bit of variation in weight across the range. The Easy is the lightest at 7.0kg, which makes sense given it’s the smallest. The Comfort comes in at 7.9kg, and the Premium is the heaviest at 9.4kg. They’re all pretty light compared to powered mowers, but it’s worth knowing if you need to carry it up and down steps or lift it in and out of a shed.
What They All Have in Common
Despite the differences, all three share the same fundamental design. They all use AL-KO’s contactless cutting system, which means the blades don’t actually touch each other – this keeps them quiet and reduces wear. They all have five steel blades and the same 220mm extra-large wheels with a five-spoke design, which are gentle on the lawn and make pushing easier.
Being hand-powered, none of them need fuel or batteries, so there are no running costs, no emissions, and no engine noise disturbing the neighbours. Just good honest pushing power from you!
Grass Collectors
One thing to be aware of – none of these mowers come with a grass collector included. They’re all available as optional extras and sold separately. The Easy uses a 35-litre collector (part number AK113867), while both the Comfort and Premium use a larger 50-litre collector (AK113868 for the Comfort, AK113869 for the Premium).
So Which One Should You Choose?
It really depends on your priorities. If you’ve got a small lawn and want to keep costs down, the Easy does everything you need at the lowest price. If you’ve got a bit more space and want those ergonomic handles and the wider cut, the Comfort offers great value in the middle of the range. And if you want the best AL-KO can offer – with infinite height adjustment, the ability to cut slightly longer grass, and those extra protective bumpers – the Premium is worth the extra investment.
All three are quality German-engineered mowers that’ll give you that lovely striped cylinder-cut finish. You really can’t go wrong with any of them!
